Project abstract: The Buckmaster II Project would safeguard approximately 51 hazardous abandoned mine openings in Emery County. The project area is located west of Green River with sites located north and south of Interstate 70 and generally within 2 miles of the San Rafael River, both east and west of the river. Project area boundary is shown on the attached location map.

The mine features in the project area are located on BLM, SITLA, and private lands. These features have been identified as hazards to public safety and are high priority for closure. The project would be conducted under the mandate of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). Cultural, biological and paleontological surveys and consultations have been conducted for compliance with NEPA, ESA and NHPA Section 106. The safeguard design minimizes impact to these resources. BLM will write a DNA, and the USDOI Office of Surface Mining will complete a Categorical Exclusion Determination.
Local government's response? The Emery County Public Lands Council is supportive of the proposed project.
How is the local government(s) likely to be impacted? Local governments could be relieved of search and rescue-related costs and paperwork.
